Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS)
ASIS is Australia's overseas intelligence collection agency.

ASIS's mission is to protect and promote Australia's vital interests through the provision of unique foreign intelligence services as directed by Government.

Our functions are defined in the Intelligence Services Act 2001 and are undertaken in the interests of Australia's national security, foreign relations and economic well-being. We are a dynamic organisation dedicated to the highest levels of professionalism, responsiveness and service.

Our primary function is to obtain and distribute intelligence information, not readily available by other means, about the capabilities, intentions and activities of individuals or organisations outside Australia, which may impact on Australian interests, and the well-being of its citizens.

Our tasks can include reporting on major defence, international relations or national economic issues. ASIS can also work against threats from weapons proliferation, terrorism and other threats to national security.

Under the Intelligence Services Act 2001, ASIS is responsible to the Government through the Minister for Foreign Affairs. ASIS works closely with other government agencies in Australia as part of a whole-of-government intelligence framework. ASIS obtains intelligence in response to priorities determined by other government agencies that are set within the framework of critical interests determined by Government.
