A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
In June 2001, an Alliance was created between the BHP Billiton Group and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd, through which the two companies share equal ownership and management of seven Bowen Basin coal mines and the Hay Point coal export terminal in Central Queensland.
As separate entities, BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi have developed a reputation as leaders in the international coal industry over more than 40 years of investment and market development. As a single entity, the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) combines the production and marketing strengths of the two organisations to create a dynamic and highly competitive coal business that accounts for more than a quarter of Australia's annual coal exports and 25% of the world's seaborne trade in metallurgical coal.
The strategic partnership brings together a diversity of operational and marketing strengths and experience, which supports a broad range of quality products from the Blackwater, Goonyella, Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Gregory and Crinum coal mines.
In addition, the Alliance manages two other mines on behalf of BHP Mitsui Coal Pty. Ltd., who own the Central Queensland mines of Riverside and South Walker Creek. Participants are BHP Billiton (80%) and Mitsui and Co (20%).
BMA also markets Illawarra coal products for export on behalf of BHP Billiton's Illawarra coal operations in southern New South Wales.
The mines managed by the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance have a capacity to produce over 50 million tonnes of coal annually, comprising high quality hard coking coals, weak coking coals, PCI coals and thermal coals, which are currently sold to over 60 customers in 24 countries.
With the exception of the Crinum underground longwall operation, BMA mines are open cut operations using draglines and truck/shovel fleets for overburden removal. Coal seams are mined by front end loaders or hydraulic excavators, and coal is transported to mine preparation plants by large capacity haul trucks. The majority of the mines are located on the western edge of the Bowen Basin, and progressively mine in a west to east direction.
BMA is dedicated to the principles of sustainable development, which includes the wellbeing of our people and communities and a fundamental respect for the environment.
