The School is totally independent and administered in trust by a Board of Trustees who appoints a Council and a Headmaster (CEO) to manage the School. Albany is a unique environment with a strong culture linked to maritime and rural histories. The future development of Albany remains linked to both maritime and rural commercial activity and the School is developing a curriculum, which in some way reflects these two aspects of life in the Great Southern Region.

GSG is a non-denominational Christian school, which seeks to teach the Christian faith in a manner, which is supportive of all the main Christian churches. Chapels are conducted regularly, and reflect a protestant approach to worship and pastoral care. All staff are expected to support the Christian foundation and aims of the School and be willing to participate actively in the School's Christian Education programme.

The School, which operates a single 100-acre waterfront campus on Oyster Harbour, continues to grow annually and has a current enrolment of 485 students K-12. A forecast of steady growth is expected in both day and residential students with particular focus on Middle and Senior School.

The School is a blend of the traditions, which typify “Grammar” schools with contemporary applications of leading educational trends. GSG has embraced the concepts of co-education, middle schooling, student-centred learning, outcomes education, vertical integration, open schooling and cross-curriculum thematic programming. The ELC (Kindergarten and Preprimary) and Junior School (Years 1-6) has established continuous education programmes, which progress children based on performance. We have a broad timetable in the Middle School Years 7-9 and have optional segregated classes in core subjects for Years 8 and 9. The Senior School offers two streams – TEE and VET.

GSG is a “School of the Sea” and is developing programmes to enable students to utilise the maritime environment as a context for learning and also to allow specialisation in maritime studies in the Senior College. Aquaculture, Naval Cadets, water sports, rowing, maritime history, traditional wooden boat building and marine science are some elements of the developing programme. Other components of the curriculum the school seeks to emphasise are music, drama, environmental studies and leadership. The school is well placed with its site and the natural environment of the region, to develop a significant Outdoor Education Programme in the years ahead.

The School prides itself on its cohesive and professional staff both in teaching and administrative and encourages professional development in both groups. Our teaching staff are highly regarded for the high quality and pastoral care they provide to students.
