Welcome to Western Health, the leading public healthcare provider in Melbourne's western suburbs.
Western health is a large organisation consisting of three public hospital campuses (Sunshine, Footscray and Williamstown) with 4500 staff who work to improve the overall health of people across Melbourne's West.
We offer a wide range of services to a catchment of more than 650,000 people. Our catchment is the most culturally diverse in Australia and we offer up to 70 different languages through our interpreter services each day.
Our community has the highest level of underlying illness in metropolitan Melbourne. Latest research shows that men in particular have the highest rates of cardiovascular disease and mental illness while the population generally suffers from high rates of obesity, cancer, drug and alcohol addiction and infectious diseases.
Patients who are treated in our hospitals and community clinics are usually suffering from more than one of these conditions.
Western Health is proud of its ability to deliver flexible health services to meet the ever changing needs of our catchment.
We provide emergency, medical, surgical, aged care and rehabilitation services across our three main campuses and women's and children's services at our Sunshine campus including birthing services catering for an average 3000 births per annum. A drug and alcohol services for the western region is offered through our DASWest service and we have two residential services for elderly patients at Reg Geary House in Melton and Hazeldean Nursing Home in Williamstown.
Western Health is currently planning to create Melbourne's leading acute teaching hospital and ambulatory care centre based on the existing Sunshine Hospital site. Our vision is a better deal for health care in the West. The new complex will combine full health care facilities with a teaching, research and university/academic hub. It will accommodate a significant increase in demand on services. The tertiary environment will be a highly regarded option for health professional to conduct research and engage in a range of teaching and educational activity.
Doctors, nurses and allied health staff will be encouraged to make a full-time commitment to our patient population lured by the combination of public and private practice and teaching and training opportunities.
