Select the right classification

The category in which you place your job ad will have a strong effect on the number and type of applicants you get.

After writing the details of your Job Ad on the screen, Step 1 of 4: Write Your Job Ad, you need to classify the position.

Note that all fields are required, with the exception of Area. When in doubt, provide as much information as possible to the jobseeker.

After selecting a Location from the dropdown list, indicate your Area. Specifying the Area is optional but it can provide more information to applicants seeking a job locally and help to filter candidates. For help deciding which area to choose, click Which area is my job in?

Classification

The Classification you designate for the job you’re offering is extremely important. Applicants typically search for job ads in only one or a few classifications. Give the job an appropriate Classification based on the job description, responsibilities and requirements. This does not always match the industry your business fits into.

For example, if the job ad is promoting an executive assistant position for your engineering company, choose Administration for the classification, not Engineering. If the job ad is for a building maintenance role on a university campus, place the job ad in Trades & Services, not Education & Training.

Sub-Classification

The Sub-Classification options are presented after you have chosen a Classification and allow you to give a more specific label to the role. Avoid selecting Other as a sub-classification if something more appropriate exists.

Returning to the previous example, after picking Administration for the classification, you’d use PA/Executive Assistant as the Sub-Classification.

Specialisation

Sometimes, a job is so specialised that you can specify the niche it fits into. Accounting, Education & Training, Engineering, Healthcare & Medical and IT jobs can be categorised at the specialisation level. Avoid selecting Other as a specialisation if something more appropriate exists. If there are multiple specialisations that could be suitable for this role, then select the one that matches the qualifications and experience of your ideal candidate.
