Government departments usually subcontract construction work to corporates or privately owned companies. However, all levels of government can employ building and construction workers in different capacities.
Metropolitan, regional and rural councils provide local services such as roads, bridges and footpaths, water and sewerage, parks and libraries, affordable housing and many other vital community functions for their residents. In short, services that require building and construction industry skills.
State governments are another option. For example, on one day in late 2005, the Queensland state government had six building and construction jobs and 21 engineering positions advertised.
The Federal Government is the least likely direct employer. However, the defence department does employ building and construction professionals and tradespeople.
The Australian Army offers professionals, such as selected civil engineers, careers as officers. Future electricians, plumbers and carpenters can sign up with the army, get a trade qualification, stay or move into the civilian world. This can be a very attractive option as you get paid well during your apprenticeship – but taking orders isn’t for everyone!
