Small businesses usually involve self-employed tradespeople running their own show, and perhaps hiring a few extra hands to help out as business grows.
Depending on the type of business, some operators will keep things small and stay as sole traders; others may expand their client base, hire more staff and potentially become a privately owned business employing many people.
A self-employed bricklayer who works on residential housing and employs two other brickies and a labourer would be a good example of a small business.
