The building and construction industry is extremely diverse with everything from typical labouring jobs to trades jobs such as carpenters, bricklayers and electricians, to drafting, surveying, engineering, safety inspecting, supervising, plant operation jobs and many more.
In 2003–04, the industry turnover was estimated at $76 billion.
776 000 people worked in the residential and non-residential sectors of the industry in 2003–04 – the equivalent of 7.6% of the Australian workforce.
Building and construction jobs reflect general population trends. The majority of jobs are found in NSW (33%), Victoria (31%) and Queensland (19%).
