Short- and long-term factors

The property boom and surge in infrastructure investment is always good for growth in construction. Overall, jobs in the construction industry grew by 5 000 places in the two quarters to November 2004 and March 2005.

There is good job growth in Queensland and Western Australia due to investment in infrastructure such as ports, rail, mining and roads. The construction growth in Victoria which was boosted by the 2006 Commonwealth Games is set to continue, with major freeway construction and other projects underway.

In the longer term, the future for jobs in the industry is very good. The ACTU has warned of a national shortage of 250 000 apprentices over the next decade which means that many jobs will remain in high demand.

Long-term demand for construction workers looks positive due to the huge national investment in infrastructure.
