Tap the hidden job market

When you apply for a job that has been advertised, it pays to research the company’s competitors too. It will help you in the interview, but even if you don’t get the job you can approach the competitors and make yourself known to them. Even if they don’t have a job vacancy at the time, they can keep your details on file and you could get an interview before any job gets listed.

Networking by taking part in conferences, seminars, breakfast meetings, and special interest groups run by associations and other organisations is also an excellent way to meet engineers from companies that might be hiring.
