It will help you in the interview, but even if you don’t get the job you can approach the competitors and make yourself known to them.
Even if they don’t have a job vacancy at the time, they can keep your details on file and you could get an interview before any job gets listed.

organisations is also an excellent way to meet engineers from companies that might be hiring.
