Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show a total of 235,696 Australians were employed in specialist IT businesses in 2002-03 (the latest year in which figures are available). Of these workers, 69% were permanently engaged in computer consultancy services.

The IT industry accounted for around 8% of Australia’s gross domestic product in 2002-3. This figure includes IT and telecommunications professionals. Research and development expenditure in IT was estimated at $1,439 million (Source: Australian Computer Society).

At the beginning of 2002, total IT imports were valued at $20 billion annually, compared to imports of:

• Motor vehicles (non-industrial) – $9.9 billion
• Fuels and lubricants – $8.8 billion
• Textiles, clothing and footwear – $4.8 billion
