Contracting is widespread in the IT industry – in fact, estimates show that up to 80% of all IT jobs are held by contractors (Source: Computerworld website data). Contractors can be self-employed or work through one of the many agencies that specialise in finding IT staff.
Contract staff are paid by the hour or per day, often at relatively high rates; especially for people who are well-qualified, experienced or certified in an in-demand skill. Although IT contractors theoretically work on short-term projects, in practice many stay in a role for months or even years. Contractors have been known to become indispensable to an organisation.
Consultants provide expert advice on particular areas and are often bought in to provide solutions to specific problems. IT consultants usually specialise in very specific fields, such as security, architecture, interfaces or useability.
