What are the job opportunities?

IT jobs are found in every business sector and just about any company, so there are thousands of potential job opportunities for qualified people. And while there are no particular 'skills shortages' among IT professionals, there is a healthy demand for people with certain skill sets.

A great many IT professionals work as contractors and consultants and opportunities abound. IT professionals also have the option of working overseas, as IT is a truly global industry.

Hot jobs

One of the challenges facing people planning to move into IT is choosing a specialty which is, or will be, in demand. Currently, hot jobs include those in the growing web services environment, where demand for C# (a Microsoft programming language) is rising.

IT business analysis is another growing field, and it has a massive advantage – it relies on more than raw IT skills. The ability to relate business objectives to IT in a very detailed functional specification is highly sought. It is also a difficult role to offshore.

Those with the right experience and qualifications can secure healthy salaries in roles such as senior IT managers, project architects, data modellers, programming team leaders and senior network architects.

 FYI

'Skills shortage' refers to the shrinking labour market, occurring because of our ageing population, slowing birth rates and downturn in skilled immigration.
